Treating Bay Area backs, necks and shoulders since 2012

Dr. David Dufour opened Alameda Disc & Spine in 2012. Depending on what he finds, a visit may combine three things: non-surgical spinal decompression for disc and nerve pain, Active Release Technique for tight or injured muscles and tendons, and adjustments for joints that have stopped moving well. His reviews keep mentioning the same things. He listens. He explains what he's finding. And he makes sure you know your home exercises before you leave.

Our comprehensive treatment approach includes the following techniques:

  • Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

A motorized table gently stretches the spine in slow cycles, designed to take pressure off bulging discs and pinched nerves. Sessions run about 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Chiropractic Care

Targeted adjustments to get stiff joints in the spine and limbs moving again and ease pressure on irritated nerves. Gentler, low-force options are available if you prefer.

  • Active Release Technique

Hands-on work that finds tight or scarred muscle, tendon and nerve tissue and works it loose while you move. Often used for overuse and sports injuries.

  • Rapid Release Technique

A handheld high-speed vibration tool used on scar tissue and adhesions, usually alongside Active Release Technique.

  • Self Care Instruction

A short list of stretches and habit changes to do at home, updated as you improve, to help protect your progress between visits.

  • Education

Plain-English answers to three questions: what's going on, what the plan is, and how you'll know it's working.

Hurt on a long run, a long workday, or just a long week?

Most aches don't come from one dramatic injury. They build up from the things we do every day. Dr. Dufour treats the strains that come from all of it, and works out what's causing them so you know what to change.

  • Running and sport

Many runners first met him through RUN365, the San Francisco Marathon's training program. He also works with athletes outside running, including an elite figure skater.

  • Work

Neck, shoulder, wrist and low-back strain from long days at a laptop, on your feet, or lifting on the job. Repetitive strain injuries are one of his specialties.

  • Everyday life

The back that went out lifting a kid or a couch. The neck you slept on wrong. The car accident you're still feeling months later. Bring it in and he'll work out what's going on.
